Hang Time with Jonas Wood

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

I stopped by Jonas Wood’s studio today to check out some of his new work.  Unfortunately I didn’t shoot any of his new work as it hasn’t been shown anywhere yet, and he’s rather protective of where his work pops up.  Anyway, He has a whole batch of other new work over at UCLA’s Hammer Museum for a show that runs from now until May 9th.  The work he has at the Hammer is all abstract potted plant still lifes.  He said he doesn’t normally focus an entire show on just one subject like this, but he’d been saving this work up and it just seemed right to put it all in one show together.  It’s interesting to see the progression of these works from the more realistic potted plants that he’s incorporated into his interiors paintings to the abstract, flat, almost sculptural pieces he’s included in this show.  Also, if you are in Boston, Jonas has a show coming up with Chris Caccamise from February 20th to March 27th at the La Montagne Gallery. Is The Art Market Back?!

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

As quoted from this New York Times article:

“No doubt about it, the market is now back to where it stood before the recession. Great coups are still to be made while the hoi polloi charge on, ready to pay the earth for pictures or sculptures, good or bad, that hit them in the stomach strongly enough.”

Illustrator Nick Dewar Passes On

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I found it sad to realize that Nick was only 37.  An extremely talented young man with a fine career ahead of him.  I read is obituary and didn’t know he was living in Newport Beach – you’d think I would have crossed paths with him since I lived in the OC for 15 years…the art community is not that big a place.  Again, very sad.  My condolences to his family.  Below are some samples of his work, and more HERE.

Barry McGee & Phil Frost @ Prism

Monday, February 1st, 2010

I’m not sure why I didn’t post these pics right after the show, but I guess better late than never.  The show was at the new Prism Gallery in Hollywood and featured some really, really big work by these two guys.  Phil’s biggest piece covered most of a high ceilinged 2-story wall…I’m guessing 25-plus feet?  Anyway, the show was back in November and was called “Mind The Gap.”  Other than the size of the works, I can’t say any of the work broke new ground for either of these artists.  But I guess that’s not a requirement for a new show.  The work was really amazing, don’t get me wrong…I’d love to get some work from these guys.
